Sparks Hometowne Farmers Market

It’s that time again, it’s Thursday night Farmer’s Market at Victorian Square in Sparks.  If you haven’t been, there’s something for everyone.  To fresh produce all the way down to fried zucchini. All different types of food for you to buy and try.

If you have nothing fun to do on Thursday night, come out and get some fresh produce from your favorite local farms.  Meet some of your friends or make some new ones and enjoy what the farmers market has to offer you.

The Sparks Hometowne Farmers Market starts today at 3:00 until 8:00pm and go through August.  Make sure you go and check it out, you do have the whole summer for this fun filled event.

“The Sparks Hometowne Farmers Market is now known as the Whole Foods Hometowne Farmer’s Market, thanks to the City of Sparks teaming up with Whole Foods Market as the title sponsor of the event. The idea is to return the market to its original focus of being a place for families to come have a fun afternoon and enjoy indulging in fresh fruits and vegetables. The market is also produced by Shirley’s Farmers’ Markets of Sparks. There are some other changes, so read on.

About the Sparks Whole Foods Hometowne Farmers Market

The 2012 Whole Foods Sparks Hometowne Farmers Market will be the 20th season of this popular event. The market will be in the Victorian Square Plaza, between Victorian Avenue and the Century Theaters. This location eliminates the hassle and expense of closing Victorian Avenue to traffic every week. The market will be on Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. The earlier opening time is intended to put an emphasis on local farmers and food, giving people an opportunity to take home locally produced food for meals at home. Opening day is Thursday, June 7, with the market repeating every Thursday through August 23.

If you want to get real local, look for the “Nevada Grown” sign on produce vendor booths, which will ensure you are buying food from nearby Nevada locations like Fallon, Yerington, and even Reno. Our northern California neighbors are also well represented, particularly with fruits, berries, and vegetables more suited to their milder climate.

A new feature at the Whole Foods Sparks Hometowne Farmers Market is food trucks. Several of our local Reno mobile eateries will set up on Victorian Square in front of the Nugget, including Kenji, Taste of New York, Dish Truck, and St. Lawrence Pizza Company.

Growers at the Whole Foods Sparks Hometowne Farmers MarketNumerous growers from northern Nevada and California bring their produce to the Whole Foods Sparks Hometowne Farmers Market. Here are some of the vendors from which you can buy fresh fruit and vegatables… “

And the Winner Is???

And the winner is??? The Silver State!!! Say what? You’re all thinking was I watching the same pageant? Yep, I know Rhone Island won. So how was Nevada the winner? Well having it in own backyard is how we win!

I know that my blogs are about what’s happening in Northern Nevada but I’m taking us South. This we just had Miss USA here in Las Vegas last night at the Planthollywood I thought it would be fun to blog about it.

The tourism for these pageant is amazing. Do you know the these girls from all 50 states bring all of their family and friends to Las Vegas. Plus most of the former Miss USA state title holders come in to cheer the new girl and have reunions with the girls from their year. Talk about winning in the tourism for our State!

I was very lucky enough to have been invited to Miss USA two years ago. My best friend was Miss Nevada USA 2010. Sadly I was unable to attend because I was just starting my job with the Governor that Monday. But that same year Las Vegas was lucky to hold Miss Universe. 83 countries came into our State. Yet again we were a winner and that time I was able to go down to Las Vegas and represent our state for the Governor. That was an amazing experience!!

The history of Miss USA.

“Who would have thought that in 1952, a local “bathing beauty” competition spearheaded by Catalina Swimwear in Long Beach, CA would transform into an international annual tradition with countless young women around the world vying to become a part of Miss Universe history? As millions of fans have watched around the globe, the contest has evolved into a powerful, year-round,  international organization that advances and supports opportunities for these young women.

These women are savvy, goal-oriented and aware. The delegates who become part of the Miss Universe Organization display those characteristics in their everyday lives, both as individuals, who compete with hope of advancing their careers, personal and humanitarian goals, and as women who seek to improve the lives of others.”

Get Set and Start Running: RTO

Who’s running in the Reno-Tahoe Odyssey on June 1-2, 2012? I’m not going to lie, when I heard RTO, I thought PGA golf. I was so wrong; it’s the other RTO which is the Reno-Tahoe Odyssey. I know a lot of my friends are running in it as we speak. I’m currently following them on Facebook.

This is its 8th year for the Odyssey relay run which was started by Eric Lerude. It will take place in Reno, Lake Tahoe, Carson City, and Virginia City. It’s over hour 24 hours of running and walking 178 miles. This is definably a great way to “Discover Your Nevada”.

There’s so much to do for the runners. There are many contests to be won, here’s a few Best Team Name, Best Team Shirt, Best Costume, Best Decorated Team Vans and Most Spirited Team. The runners can even get married in Virginia City. Everyone has a great time and this event help out local charities, the two that they picked this year are the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation and Tahoe Pyramid Bikeway.

Here is some fun and interesting facts that I found from their web site.

“It is a long wandering. A relay run ideally suited for teams of 12 runners on a 178 mile course. Starting in Downtown Reno along the Truckee River. Traveling through the Sierra Nevada mountains and along the shores of Lake Tahoe. Circling back through the Northern Nevada high desert to where you began in Reno.

The race begins Friday. It is a staggered start, with waves of teams starting every 15 to 30 minutes. The slower seeded teams will begin around 9 a.m. and the faster seeded teams will begin in the afternoon. Exact start times will be announced in the month before the event. Plan to get to Reno by Thursday night.

The only changes of fortune you will experience will be for the better. You will have a great time. And when you finish, you will enjoy an overwhelming feeling of accomplishment and teamwork. And be the special guests at a party to celebrate your achievement.

To explain this chart, please see the runner in the No. 1 slot. That runner will run Leg Nos. 1, 13 and 25. No. 1 is 4.8 miles and rated “easy,” No. 13 is 6.2 miles and rated “moderate,” and No. 25 is 3.2 miles and rated “easy.” That runner will run a total of 14.2 miles. We have ranked that set of legs as the 10th hardest (or 3rd easiest) group of legs, so the Runner 1 slot receives the No. 10 ranking.

The person that you put in the No. 4 slot in your runner line-up will have the most difficult set of legs, hence the no. 1 ranking. So assign your best runner to be the No. 4 runner.

The legs that we have rated as “most difficult” contain the steepest climbs on the course. No. 4 contains an approx. 3 mile climb up the Dog Valley Road, No. 14 contains an approx. 1.5 mile climb near Bliss State Park, No. 19 contains an approx. 2.5 mile climb to Daggett Pass, and Nos. 30 through 32 contain some steep sections in the Virginia City area. The other most challenging leg is No. 33 descending Geiger Grade. That is the longest downhill leg of the course.

Most the legs are rated “moderate” and “easy” and are relatively flat, with the difference in rating being a matter of distance.”

Moms on the Run

Every year JP Pinocchio has been here to make sure this run goes off without a hitch. It all started back in May 2000. They started it to help local women living with cancer. It was Pinocchio and the whole Northern Nevada community that has made this run a success.

Every year this run is getting bigger and bigger. More and more people are coming out to support this great cause. I know this year, different groups of my friends all got together and formed team with theme.

People of Northern Nevada are very creative when it comes to themes for their teams. My friend Julie Merica her teams theme was “Party People, celebration love, celebrating life.” Of course it was pink with black writing. This is great way to give back and have some fun with your friends. Next May make sure you and your team will be there to run!!

“Moms on the Run is a non-profit organization that was formed in 2000 to raise money to assist local women with cancer. Funds raised will be donated to specific needs of women’s cancers in Northern Nevada. We are local people helping local people. All money raised here stays here.

Wish Day

How many of you knew that April 29, 2012 was National World Wish Day?  I didn’t until I read the Reno Gazette-Journal on the front page was this story. It was such a wonderful story but all their stories from the Make-A-Wish Foundation are amazing. Below I included the link to the story if you didn’t get a chance to read it.

Did you know that we have Make-A-Wish Foundation in Northern Nevada? We do have one and they do grant many of wishes for children. This is an amazing foundation that I have privilege to work with.  They have done so many wonderful things for these children, that these children would have never been able to do.

I was lucky enough back in 2010, to make a little boy’s dream come true. His dream was to ride the rail road in Nevada, well I heard the story and I told the Governor about him.  He was able to meet the Governor, have a one-one talk with him, , tour the Capitol, and the Governor presented him with a copy of a proclamation, one of the rail roads that he visited happen to be celebrating a milestone and they received a proclamation for it. That was the best feeling; to be able to make someone wishes come true.  I still have the thank you that he sent us.

Here the link to the RGJ story on World Wish Day: http://www.rgj.com/article/20120429/NEWS/120429004/Make-Wish-Foundation-trips-shopping-sprees-help-children-get-through-tough-treatments?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|FRONTPAGE|p

“Make-A-Wish will celebrate the third annual World Wish Day on 29 April 2012 with thousands of people across 48 countries the Foundation serves around the globe.

World Wish Day commemorates the anniversary of the wish that inspired the creation of what is now the world’s leading wish-granting organization. Seven year old Chris Greicius’ wish to be a police officer was granted in Phoenix, Arizona by volunteers on 29 April 1980. To celebrate Chris’ wish and the work of the Foundation, Make-A-Wish affiliates, chapters and supporters from all over the world will be joining in the celebration through wishgranting events in their communities.

This year, a special group of celebrity wishgranters came together to craft a Public Service Announcement to raise awareness about World Wish Day® and the Make-A-Wish® mission: : youtu.be/OFUjTf3N82Q.

Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, among other celebrities, have lent their voices to the World Wish Day campaign. In supporting this important cause, Miley Cyrus granted the wishes of eight children from Australia, Canada, Spain and the US with a private meet and greet. Other celebrities have joined in, including WWE superstar John Cena who granted wishes to children across Europe throughout April, including wish children Aaron from Ireland and Mark & Alex from the UK.

Several Make-A-Wish International sponsors are helping us celebrate World Wish Day this year, including Mattel, Disney Stores Worldwide, CNN International, Hard Rock International and Ringo Starr’s Lotus Foundation – as well as clothiers Brooks Brothers, who are proud to announce their ten day fundraising initiative, starting on World Wish Day itself, 29th April.

Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation® has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work. The Foundation’s mission reflects the life-changing impact that a Make-A-Wish® experience has on children, families, referral sources, donors, sponsors and entire communities.”

Denim Day

Last Wednesday April 25 was Denim Day, which represents prevention sexual violence.
Here in our State of Nevada, the First Lady Kathleen Sandoval urged everyone to wear denim. She had a press conference at Old Navy to talk about sexual assault and how to prevent it.

The whole month of April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The Governor signed a proclamation declaring the whole month to its awareness. Having the awareness about it and how to stop it is the first step.

It’s sad to know that we know one or two women or men that have been sexual assaulted. The statistics of sexual assault is so high. There are so many people that have been sexual assault that have never report it or even worst never told anyone. Never having a voice and feeling like it was their fault. Having this month and day is giving both women and men a voice to speak out and stop this from happening.

“Denim Day is a campaign to prevent sexual violence through education and public awareness.  April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Denim Day is a call to action for all people to come together by wearing denim as a visible sign of protest against sexual violence. By participating in Denim Day this April, you can play a role in the prevention of sexual violence. Every year we ask community members, elected officials, businesses and students to make a social statement with their fashion and on April 25th to wear jeans as a visible means of protest against misconceptions that surround sexual assault.”

Italy, 1997
A teenage girl was picked up by her 45-year-old old driving instructor for her first lesson. He took her to an isolated location, pulled her out of the car and forcefully raped her. Despite threats that she would be killed if she told anyone, the girl reported the incident, and the case is prosecuted. The driving instructor was convicted of rape and sentenced to jail.
Months later, the perpetrator appealed the sentence, and the case made it all the way to the Italian Supreme Court. The case against the driving instructor was overturned, and the perpetrator was released.
In a statement released by the Head Judge, he stated, “because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans, it was no longer rape but consensual sex.”
Outraged by the verdict, the women in the Italian Parliament began what started out as a protest against the court case by wearing jeans to work. It began an annual international demonstration known as Denim Day. The wearing of jeans became an international symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault.
We encourage the people in our community to show their support by wearing jeans  to work on April 25. It will serve as a visible means of protest against myths that surround sexual assault. Together, we can stamp out ignorance by awareness.
When you participate in Denim Day you:
1. Make it possible for more sexual assault survivors to reach out and find help.
2. Promote prevention through education so sexual violence doesn’t occur.
3. Encourage institutional and societal change.
4. Make a powerful statement without ever saying a word.”
